If he comes out of his pocket with a gun…

Our family friends, Gary and Kathy, were dining with us at a McDonald’s restaurant in Georgia.  It was hot summertime and had just rained about a tenth of an inch, so the temperature was still mid 90s, the streets were oily, and the humidity gauge offscale high.  We were discussing the then-recent mass shooting at a Luby’s restaurant in Killeen, Texas.

While we were feasting, a man dressed in black denim jeans and a heavy military jacket entered the restaurant.  He was slightly stooped over, both hands jammed into the pockets of his coat.  He bypassed the front counter, ordered nothing, and wandered to the seating area.  Occasionally he tilted his head back and muttered something into the air, alternately grinning, glowering, walling his eyes around.

Everyone in the restaurant tensed up.  Gary, who is an ex-cop, leaned over and whispered, “If he comes out of his pocket with a gun, let’s you and me jump him and let the wives get away.”

Just then, the man reached into his pocket and pulled out an enormous wad of shoelaces.  He piled them on his table and said something to them, cupping his hands over the pile as if warming them.  He started swaying back and forth, moving his lips and hovering over the shoelaces.

Gary never took his eyes off the guy.  After a couple of minutes he reached back into his pocket.  Gary tensed like a puma, silently positioning his feet for a quick strike.  I followed his lead.

Then the guy took from his pocket a Bic lighter and brandished it at the pile of shoelaces, turning his head slightly in an expression of cold malice, looking sideways and squinty-eyed.  He threatened the shoelaces for a couple of minutes but never actually lit the lighter.  Then he backed off, stuffed the whole pile back into this army coat pocket and wandered out of the store, still muttering into the air.
