Side note

Despite the efforts of Miss Manners, table etiquette is generally not so good in America.  I saw a young man with his father eating at a Wendy’s restaurant.  The son, who looked to be about 18, was eating his sandwich with his mouth wide open.  His queasy father could not bear to watch.  The boy looked like an alligator eating a dog, clamp, clamp, clamp.

And then there are the folks whose mealtime catharsis consists of humiliating a waitress.  This is just plain cruel and does nothing to improve food quality.  Besides, an old friend who used to work at a steak house in Birmingham warned me, “Never mess with people who handle your food.”

If that’s not clear to you, axe Jesse Jackson about it.

I close this brief plaint by noting that table manners tend to be regional.  We Southerners, for example, dine a little more quietly in restaurants than do our conquerors from the higher latitudes.  We certainly do not expect our Yankee overlords to observe a stony Nordic reserve when sharing repast among us.  But we do humbly entreat them to refrain from competitively yelling to be heard above one another, even after the beer kicks in. Yes. Especially then.

  1. ha! love this post…

and if I may, I’d like to add:

It is considered polite to speak to the person you’re dining with, not the chap on the other end of your phone.

Ditto for when you’re grocery shopping…

And this happened just a few weeks ago when I was in a convenient store at the register: A woman walks up to the second register to my left, with a young girl. She’s speaking LOUDLY, so I assumed she was talking to the girl. I looked over at her as she’s handing the cashier her credit card, and she’s saying for everyone in there to hear, “No, no, not that one… I don’t use that one”

The cashier was understandably confused because the woman was looking directly at her… and so she hesitated to take the credit card. At her hesitance, the woman screeched, “HERE! would you take this?!!” while she pushed her card into her hand…

Only when she turned slightly could I see the tiny bluetooth thingy stuck in her ear that had to be the size of cockroach. She had been carrying on a conversation on her phone the whole time.

Some people just don’t get it that the world doesn’t revolve around them.
