Dealing with an impudent punk

When I was a schoolboy, the punks and barbarians played a game of denying to a teacher’s face what she could plainly see.  If a punk was copying answers from the kid in the next seat, the teacher would command the punk to cut it out.  This was the starting point for the game.  “What? Who? Me?  What I do?  Teacher, why you always be meddlin’ wiff me?”  After that followed an exchange of accusations and intentionally idiotic denials.  For the purposes of this game, the stupider and more transparent the lies were, the better.

There were three ways for the teacher to lose the game.  One was by allowing the punk to fritter away valuable class time with a childish quibble thus making the teacher appear small, having lost control of the class.  The second was by allowing the punk to make her angry which also made her appear small.  The third was by pretending not to notice the cheating in the first place, in which case anarchy won, as it were, by acing the serve.

There was only one way for the punk to lose, and that was for the teacher to cast off all pretext of being civilized and make the first blow of retaliation swift and terrible.  Courteous little Methodist white women could not bring themselves to do this, so the punks joyfully exploited the weakness and anon were pretty much running the school.

Once in a while — exceeding rare you, must understand — you’d see a teacher who understood what was at stake and what it took to win the game.  What was at stake was nothing less than the whole rule of law.  Will those responsible to keep order muster the guts to do it?  Or shall the punks rule?  And what it took for the teacher to win the game, as I’ve already explained, was an obvious eagerness to smash punks’ heads without hesitation.  A wise and properly righteous insight into the true nature of punkery cannot fail to love crushing it.

We’re watching just this sort of anarchist’s game being played in Washington.  Mr. Boehner has served notice that the House of Representatives expects the President to comply with the War Powers Act concerning hostilities in Libya.  Mr Obama has replied that there are no hostilities going on in Libya.  Remember, the stupider and more transparent the lie, the better.  That’s how you win the game if you’re playing for the anarchists.  The photo at right is from Xinhua, taken in Triploi today (June 16, 2011) following a NATO air strike.  Mr. Obama is playing a game with Mr. Boehner, the former in the role of impudent punk and the latter, I am sorry to say, in the role of a courteous little Methodist white woman.

From where I sit in the bleachers, Mr. Boehner has only one option for winning the game.  He must enforce the law on Mr. Obama and leave the President feeling like his head got smashed.  I see several ways to do that.  The first is for the Congress to cut his money off.  The second is to introduce articles of impeachment against the President.  A third is go after the President himself in a personal way by investigating, to pick an easy example, his use of a stolen Social Security number and digging through the concealed data of his personal life.  A fourth would be to draft a resolution of war against Khadaffi’s regime and then vote it down.

Sorry to be a cynic, but I don’t think Mr. Boehner and the GOP have the grit to do anything other than sputter and fume while the President smirks and orders more bombs to be dropped.  Congress will foot the bill.

Wise people know what’s at stake, and it isn’t about Libya.  It’s about the rule of law.  Do the adults have the guts to take on the punks, or will the punks rule the schoolyard?  That’s what is at stake.

The linked video shows how adults in authority sometimes have to manage people who have no respect.  There are times when this is what it takes: Being right, being brave, having a temper, and taking action.  June 2011 is one of those times.
