Abortion issue and the GOP

Fox news is carrying a headline about Mitt Romney’s refusal to sign a pro-life pledge.  The pledge is written by a pro-life group called the Susan B. Anthony list which you can read about here.  The pledge itself is not what I’d call an extremist statement.  Here it is from the SBA website:

http://www.sba-list.org/2012pledge

I PLEDGE that I will only support candidates for President who are committed to protecting Life. I demand that any candidate I support commit to these positions:

FIRST, to nominate to the U.S. federal bench judges who are committed to restraint and applying the original meaning of the Constitution, not legislating from the bench;

SECOND, to select only pro-life appointees for relevant Cabinet and Executive Branch positions, in particular the head of National Institutes of Health, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Health & Human Services;

THIRD, to advance pro-life legislation to permanently end all taxpayer funding of abortion in all domestic and international spending programs, and defund Planned Parenthood and all other contractors and recipients of federal funds with affiliates that perform or fund abortions;

FOURTH, advance and sign into law a Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act to protect unborn children who are capable of feeling pain from abortion.

The first pledge is one every candidate should be loudly endorsing every day.  Much of America’s social sickness derives from judges doing stuff like Texas microtyrant Jose Longoria who extracted a felony confession from a mother who spanked her child even though she left no marks or bruises.  Folks at SBA are merely asking that prospective presidents promise to avoid culture vandals like Longoria.  That Romney wouldn’t sign that is shocking.

The third and fourth pledges are merely legislative steps that make the pledge meaningful.  What is the use of being a pro-life politician unless you support legislation that protects life? And even if Planned Parenthood weren’t an aggressive pro-death organization, defunding this beast is a blindingly obvious thing to do in a time of budget crisis so deep that it literally threatens to overturn the foundations of the republic.  The fact that Romney can’t see his way clear to do this says he simply isn’t prudent enough to qualify as a conservative president.

Romney’s spokescreature specifically identified the second pledge as problematic because it would limit the choices he could make for nominations.  This shows a couple of things about Romney.  First, his pro-life convictions run about an Angstrom unit deep.  Second, he has failed to grasp that the pro-death camp is doing this very thing when they get elected.  What are the chances that President Obama would nominate a principled pro-life Surgeon General?

The fact that the GOP could even consider nominating a big government liberal RINO like Mitt Romney is just one more reason why, after years of supporting Republicans, I reached the point where I could no longer fly that flag.  I don’t register as a Republican any more.  The Party of Lincoln has become the Party of Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich.  Get the picture?

The GOP had — and maybe still has — a chance to offer voters a genuine alternative, the choice of limited government based on the United States Constitution.  Instead, the party is padding along six steps behind the Democrats like a Moslem woman following her man.  Memo to Republicans: The country has no need of a drag chute to retard our progress toward socialism and a fully developed culture of death.  We need America back — robust, hard working, God fearing, life honoring America.  And Mitt Romney in the White House is not a step in that direction.

Here’s the problem for the GOP.  Just as the Democrats can’t win without black voters and union voters, the GOP can’t win without evangelical Christian voters and constitutional conservatives.  If the GOP nominates a presidential candidate like Mitt Romney, those two groups will not support him (or do so only very weakly), and that will likely put Mr. Obama back in the White House in 2012.  Because there are millions of Christian conservatives just like me who are saying that we will never knowingly cast a vote in favor of a man who supports abortion.  As Doug Wilson so aptly put it, abortion is the big ‘E” on God’s eye chart of morality.  If a man can’t see that, then he’s blind.
