While we’re creating rumors…

It’s a rare day when I agree with anything the mainstream media say about the current administration, but today is such a day.  ABC’s Bob Ellis argues persuasively here that the secrecy surrounding the killing of Osama is going to create more problems than it’ll solve.  Not for the first time has this administration thought it gained by hiding something when there was (supposedly) nothing to hide.

Already the internet is roiling with conspiracy theories and ugly accounts of what really happened.  I’ll add my speculation just for fun.

First of all, I’m not aware of any evidence that Osama bin Laden has ever been a whatchacall fighting man.  He put up other people to do his dirty work for him.  After taking credit on video for the events of 9/11/2001, he’s been a fugitive, on the lam, hiding in caves, living the life of a physical coward ever since.  It’s not unreasonable to believe that when the SEALs kicked in the door to his hideout, bin Laden put up his hands and froze.  And a team of SEALs was face to face with the world’s most notorious terrorist, a man reputed to have murdered thousands.  Try to picture the standoff, however brief it may have been, in the dark at three or four in the morning, with people on both sides nauseous with fear and freaked on adrenaline.

And remember that our guys had already been through a helicopter crash and a high stakes room-to-room search of bin Laden’s house.  So while the stare down is on, something goes wrong — somebody flinches, drops a pencil on the floor — and one of our men has a startle response which inadvertently touches off his weapon.  Bang.  In the next instant, every SEAL empties his magazine into anything that moves and isn’t wearing an American uniform.  Ten seconds later, there is no living substance on the business end of the American guns.

The smoke clears.  The SEALs decompress a little.  A search begins.  No weapons are found.  Somebody motions, Turn off the cameras.  For the next 25 minutes the place is turned upside down looking for bin Laden’s guards, guns, weapons cache.  Nothing.  Cameras flick back on in the White House situation room, and bin Laden is presented stone dead after a “firefight” what wasn’t.

Converting Osama bin Laden into a cadaver is the only real achievement the Barack Obama administration can boast.  What else is there but an unconstitutional health care bill that is deeply resented by a lopsided majority of Americans?  So at last here’s an event which held the promise of getting the country to rally around Mr. Obama like it had done for his nemesis Mr. Bush, but when the deed was done it looked more like an accidental police riot.

What to do about it?  What does the Obama administration habitually do?  Hide the ball.  So the body ends up in the ocean where it cannot be examined.  Two dozen tweaked versions of the same event are put out.  The photo evidence gets dangled and then retracted as if some big decision must be made about it.  After sufficient made-for-TeeVee agonizing, officials conclude more in sorrow than in anger that the evidence has got to remain concealed.

Now they’ll start trashing anyone who questions any of this.  “Spiking the football” with bin Laden’s corpse reminds older Americans of the sick, ghoulish behavior of the Iranians poking sticks into the bodies of our men after the Carter administration’s failed hostage rescue attempt.  So, yeah, we don’t want to do that; everybody shut up.  Anone doubtful of the official version — whichever version becomes the left’s talking point version — is just a ghoul looking for blood porn.

In case you’re curious, no, I don’t care to see the photos.  But I’d like the evidence reviewed by somebody I trust, and that wouldn’t be Barack Hussein Obama or anybody who reports to him.
