Well, there it is

Mr. Obama finally released his birth certificate. Of course, experts in document forensics will need a few days to look it over, checking into matters such as the serial number, the type of paper it was printed on, curiosity questions about pencil markings, folds, creases, spacing of typed letters on the form, and so forth. But just looking at it on the internet, you have to wonder why he withheld it for so long and retained attorneys to prevent people from seeing it. Hey President Obama, what was up with that? McCain showed his as soon as he was axed. What was your problem with doing the same thing?

And I say what follows as a not-supporter of Trump’s candidacy: Thank you, Donald Trump, for goading the president into doing something he should have done years ago. For reasons why Mr. Trump (D., NY) shouldn’t be president, consult Michelle Malkin here.

There are those who argued on technical-historical grounds that Mr. Obama, even if he was born in Hawaii, never did qualify as a “natural born citizen” because his father was not American. I have read those arguments, and while they are not baseless, they are also not valid. The nearly universal interpretation of the “natural born citizen” clause is that you’re qualified to be president if you have U.S. citizenship by virtue of being born here.

Besides, whatever “natural born citizen” might have meant in 1789, the fourteenth amendment swept that aside when it said that, “All persons born… in the United States… are citizens of the United States…” Born, citizen; get it? That’s how the amendment process works — it establishes a new baseline for the Constitution and how it’s interpreted. (Note to file: This means the U.S.-born anchor baby of an illegal alien can become president.)

The best result of the president’s tardy release of the birth certificate is that it has cleared the way for a discussion of his policies on their merits (or demerits). Mr. Obama’s policies and actions are working a grievous effect on the United States. We are losing our moral decency, losing our economic strength, losing the right to develop our own natural resources, losing our sense of individual responsibility, losing our self-reliant vitality, losing international prestige and leadership, and losing yet another generation of tiny Americans to the ceaseless devouring of the abortion factories.

These problems of course preceded Mr. Obama’s tenure, but his policies have, to borrow from Zechariah, “helped forward the affliction.”  His actions are those of a guy who is just not an American at heart, who sees people as either the oppressed or the oppressors (and often gets these reversed when they do apply). So, yes, let’s talk about these things and Mr. Obama’s role in addressing them.

The second best result of the president’s action is that it will weaken his case for keeping the remainder of his information secret. Since there was, at long last, no big deal with the birth certificate, why would he continue to conceal his college records? Whence the startlingly curious Connecticut Social Security number? Where are his travel and passport records? Is his true legal name Barack Obama, or is it Barry Soetoro after he was adopted in Indonesia and never changed his name back? What are the details surrounding the highly unusual surrender of his law license? (Another note to file: Last president to surrender his law license was Bill Clinton, in connection with a perjury charge.)

And wouldn’t his continuing to conceal these records tend to confirm long-held suspicions that the president has something to hide? Won’t people begin to say that the BC was never more than a decoy to draw attention away from a much wider deception about his roots, background, and intentions? Mr. Obama, I sincerely hope, may have cornered himself into having to fulfill a campaign pledge of openness and transparency.

The public’s right to know is often an overworked excuse for uncivil agitation, but not in this case. People do have a right to know about their president.  And we still don’t quite know who this guy is.
