Three cheers for The Donald

Donald Trump has been making some enjoyable waves goading the president about his inability to produce a genuine birth certificate.  Everyone else who has done this is a lunatic, or so we are solemnly assured by the MSM that shoulders the weighty burden of telling us all what to think.  However, one of the American values which Must Not Be Questioned is that rich people are neither stupid nor crazy.  So the leftazoid shtick of labeling the “brithers” as an unhinged mob of nutjobs won’t work.

Trump’s action was attacked as “racist” by Whoopi Goldberg, Gorgon of Hollywood.  Goldberg’s statement was transparently false, hence stupid.  It gained no traction.  Nobody else on the left attempted that again.

Now they seem to be settling on a more promising theme:  Trump is engaging in a “ploy.”

I have to tell you, I initially took it as a ploy to get attention from a man who knows how to get attention.  But after Trump got into the issue and “crackpots” all over the country e-mailed him with sober, legitimate, and above all, reasonable questions, I began to sense that Trump was no longer merely engaging in a ploy for publicity.  Sure, I think he’s still having loads of fun with it, but something about the tone has changed.  There’s a note of earnestness creeping in.

Not knowing anything about Donald Trump except that he’s the wealthy owner of Earth’s most glorious comb-over, there’s a better than fifty-fifty chance that this whole episode could end up speaking well of him.  Trump is contemplating a run for the presidency.  Who’s the last candidate for president who would actually listen to people, even if it was in the midst of a ploy?

Can’t think of one?  Me neither.

So it all looks like this: Trump’s a few days into what began as a regular old publicity stunt to embarrass the president, and lo, questions about Obama’s top secret provenance turn out to be serious, and Trump is repeating those questions — good questions — such as why the president won’t just shut up the crackpot birthers by showing the document, or why nobody can remember his birth, or why the president has spent several million dollars to hide the document, or why Hawaii’s governor Abercrombie made such a spray about it and then ran from the issue behind a black hole.

If Trump keeps up this practice of actually listening to Americans, we’ll soon be hearing him ask where Obama’s college records are, who paid for his education, where his financial backing came from, who actually wrote Dreams of My Father, why he surrendered his law license, and so on.

There’s a lot about this man that the public doesn’t know, and shame on whoever voted to put a total unknown in the Oval Office.  But now that those questions are getting harder to hide from, it’s time more people of Trump’s public stature began insisting that Obama provide answers.  The sour note struck by newcomer-wimp Tim Pawlenty that the subject “should not be discussed” is exactly the wrong approach.  A request for the president to prove he’s eligible to hold office was never the least bit unreasonable in the first place.

The president is not our ruler.  He is America’s public servant, and it’s time all the lesser magistrates reminded him that the debt of public service is an obligation Obama owes to his country, not the other way around.

P.S. It’s hard to imagine The Donald being the sort of Constitutional conservative that could get my vote.  And on the pro-life issue there can be no compromise.  But this show is at least fun to watch while it lasts, and there’s always the outside chance that it could actually do some good.

To me, that sums up why questioning all this now seems rather fruitless. If America can take a great leap backwards and reclaim our conservative values and founding guidelines, ie, upholding The Constitution, I’d deem it a miracle.

I do have a question – since I only watch televised news under extreme circumstances, such as 9/11 and the earthquake in Japan, I’m only learning this info from you. Why is it that you think Trump is listening to Americans rather than just speaking from his own viewpoint?

  2. Amy, it’s just speculation on my part. A few days after he started tweaking Mr. Obama, his tone changed, and the nature of his questions started sounding more like rank-and-file birther stuff. You’re right. It may be all an act.

One reason questioning Mr. Obama’s origins might be important is that in the unlikely event he’s proven to be ineligible to be president, the laws he’s signed would not be valid. The courts would tangle over this for years, but in the end, ObamaCare would fall and take the new abortion funding sources with it. That’d be my fond hope, anyway.
