Modern distastes

The Secular Man lives for himself, so there is little he detests more than the idea of duty.  Duty comes from things that are higher than oneself.  It connects to authority, obligation, necessities laid upon him against his will.

As a consequence, the Secular Man also has a complicated relationship with the notion of truth.  It’s typical for him to pretty much deny that there is any such thing.  You don’t have to search far to find this, for example, in the famous statement that the Constitution is “over 100 years old” so nobody can tell what it means.

This happens in the theological realm too.  It’s been fashionable for way more than 100 years to spurn the notion that Scripture can be plainly understood at face value.  From the serpent’s query, “Yea, hath God said?” to the Pharisee quibbling about who must be regarded as his neighbor, the temptation to play evasive games with Scripture has been around for a very long time.  Back of that is the objection of the rebellious subjects to render any sort of duty to their lord, “We will not have this man to reign over us!” (Luke 19:14)  The basic objection is a matter of authority, and since the Secular Man can conceive of no one higher than himself, Scripture from God must be dispensed with.  He therefore answers to question of Scripture’s authority just as the Pharisee answered Christ’s question about the baptism of John.  Was it from heaven or from men.  “We cannot tell,” came the reply. (Matt 21:27)

But hiding in feigned ignorance won’t help the Secular Man’s situation before the one who tries the hearts of men.

  1. Your entry reminds me of a quote by George MacDonald-

“Those who gain no experience are those who shirk the King’s highway for fear of encountering the Duty seated by the roadside.”
