Had a good heart… not.

The most common lie told at the funeral of a scoundrel is that he had a good heart.  Preachers do this when the audience is likely to think the misdeeds of the dead arose from malice.  It’s a sort of lame apology offered way after the fact.  Audiences generally play along by agreeing that the old boy meant well, never mind how his wife’s nose came to be so crooked.

Jesus, never one to preach for the pleasure of man, refused to pass along white lies about man’s goodness.  After belittling the Pharisees’ hypocrisy about washing hands, he told his disciples that defilement doesn’t enter people from outside.  It is a force that thrives unseen in the heart and advertises itself in deeds.

For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: all these evil things come from within, and defile the man. (Mark 7:21-23)

Evil actions proceed from evil hearts, said the Master.  Ground zero for defilement is the human soul.

The Secular Man understands this precisely backwards.  He thinks people do evil after society has first corrupted them.  It’s scientific blame shifting, brushing aside the mystery of how a society of good individuals became a source of general badness which, in turn, corrupted the individuals.

People often react to the passage in Mark by trying to identify the Pharisees.  There’s no better way to miss the point.  In Christ’s analysis, we are all in the Pharisees’ camp honoring man-made rules and setting aside the ones God wrote.  And no, we don’t even mean well.

Once we get that lesson down, the ground is ready to receive Gospel seed.  Jesus blessed those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, which is something you do only after you realize you don’t have any of your own.
