Another creationist textbook law…

I’m almost always glad to see Christians trying to win back some piece of the culture.  The state of Louisiana is trying to do that with a new law that will adjust something or other about science information.  Here’s the text of the law (HT: ICR).  On the surface of things, it doesn’t really look like a bad law.  I’d vote for it if I were a senator in Louisiana.  Huzzah.

But trying to fix culture by getting creation back into the government school system is, with all due respect to the many Christian soldiers doing battle there, not a battle I care to win.  My wish, though it’s only a pipe dream given our present situation in American society, is that Christians would start saying matter-of-factly that educating kids isn’t the gummint’s job.

If that’s true, and it is, then yet another dreary textbook skirmish in Louisiana or Texas is just noise.  It’s not the goal the church should be pursuing.  The famous “wall of separation” doesn’t need to be positioned between church and state so much as it needs to be positioned between the state and the souls of its people.  Souls are matters for families and churches.  The government has its proper sphere, and that sphere should properly have no truck with anybody’s soul nor the souls of their kids.

Like I said, pipe dream.  If our post-millennial friends are right about Earth becoming pristine before Christ’s return, then it must eventually come to pass that governments everywhere will repent of the folly of getting  involved in education.  Churches and families will eagerly step up to the task, and that will be that, amen and amen.

Until that comes to pass, well-meaning Christians may be commended for trying to make bad government school into better government school.  And it would be better if teachers told their kids that Jesus made them in his own image and likeness which implies a moral standard that they ought to reach for.  But the whole enterprise of state indoctrination would be better if it were utterly abandoned and the responsibility of education given into the hands of God’s people.
