To a Christian brother on the subject of homosexuality

Bro. ______________,

First Corinthians 6 names two varieties of homosexuals and says they shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

Along comes modern society and says a person who experiences a certain kind of attraction is defined as a homosexual.  Society applies that label based on something called “orientation.”  And once the label is applied, they start advancing all the arguments that it’s genetic, that it can never change, etc., etc., etc.  The label “homosexual” then becomes an immutable trait as changeless as race or height.  And which of you by taking thought can add a cubit to his stature, right?  Homosexuality?  Same thing!

And then somebody comes along and says if a person does no more than experience these feelings while remaining celibate, then he can be a Christian.  (As if lust weren’t a sin, but that’s a discussion for another time.)

And after that, there’s this new label, “gay Christian,” and people begin to tell us we have to accept that label.  And maybe if we don’t accept it, we’re committing some graceless evil against homosexuals whom we would like to invite into heaven.

So step by step, a logic toy has been created where they prove 1 Cor 6:9 cannot possibly be true.  It reminds me of the algebra student’s proof that two equals one.

And that’s why I keep insisting that the cultural baggage that comes along with the modern use of the term “gay” or “homosexual” has to be rejected.  The doctrine of once-saved-always-saved has a new form, once-homosexual-always-homosexual.  People are trying to take a modern, culturally warped definition of the word homosexual (i.e., that “homosexual” is an immutable trait which is hard-wired in your genes) and upload it like a computer virus into 1 Cor 6.  Yet the Bible says people can change and not be homosexuals any more:  “And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”  (1 Cor 6:11)

So this is why I flat-out reject this whole line of discussion, brother.  It involves accepting two anti-Gospel concepts the gay activist community insists on, namely, that homosexuality is an unalterable trait, and second, that persons properly identified as homosexuals can go to heaven contrary to 1 Cor 6:9.

We’re not doing the homosexual any favors by accepting this line of argumentation, bro.  We should be pointing them to the Savior who is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think.  That homosexuality is stronger than the power of the Gospel simply isn’t so, and that’s not an accusation meant to condemn.  It’s a truth given by our Redeemer to liberate.  The first step toward liberation is accepting the fact that God is actually the expert on matters pertaining to salvation, and that he hasn’t misstated his opinions in 1 Cor 6:9-11.
