A View from the Altar / Operation Grim Reaper

Operation Grim Reaper

Citrus Country Sheriff Jeff Dawsey and his men just conducted a laudable sting operation against pedophiles called Operation Grim Reaper.  Way to go, Sheriff, and please catch all these guys (even if there’s not an election coming) and lock them away where they cannot harm anybody else’s kids.

But what a dismal fact of Americana that pedophilia is not rare.  You can find sex offender registries on line for your area.  Just Google it.  And you can catalog all the rot and perversion till you’re sick of it.

And then you can read about the military admitting homosexuals and all the legal wrangling over that.

And then you can back up in time to the sexual revolution, the advent of The Pill, the meowing sixties, the decay of the family, the liberalizing of divorce, the rise in teen pregnancy and bastardy and its related social ills.

These are not multiple problems but rather all of one piece.  God created the family and placed a holy sexual relationship (Heb 13:4) at its core.  In the beginning, it was good.  The man and his wife were naked, and they were not ashamed.  But man has corrupted that as far as he is able and continues to look for ways to go lower.  No doubt ways will be found.

The solution to this problem is not coining ever more stern adjectives to use in denouncing it.  The pedophiles already know they’re doing evil.  A matter-of-fact reminder in the form of an arrest is usually all that’s needed to reactivate a  dormant conscience, although it must be noted that there is such a thing as a “reprobate mind,” to deploy the King James phraseology, a mind devoid of judgment (Rom 1:28 KJV).  Scripture warns that there are those whom God gives over to their sins, and the chief symptom of this damnation is the inability to see evil as evil.

But the majority of offenders need only to look their shame in the eye, admit the depravity, and come to the realization that they are lost souls.  Lost souls need a Savior, one who already knows every deed they’ve committed, yet loves them enough to give his life for them anyhow.

Here, I think, we begin to understand why grace is amazing.  Jesus died to save sinners, even pedophiles, and he did it before they ever took a moment’s reflection on him or the moral enormity of their doings.
