Clarifying things… ouch. (Hebrews 3)

Christians are obliged to be faithful to the Lord.  The writer of Hebrews reminds us of this in nearly every chapter of his letter.  How shall we escape if we neglect this great salvation? he asks early in the letter.  (He 2:3)  Chapter 3 gets to the heart of the issue he’s concerned about, which is apostasy.

There are two great divisions of God’s dealings with mankind, law and grace.  These fall under two preeminent names, Moses and Jesus.  Moses was faithful but his people were not, goes the argument, so they all perished in the wilderness.  In like manner, Jesus was faithful to his Father.  But the question remains open: How faithful will his people be?

He locates the cause of the Israelites’ error in unbelief.  (He 3:18-19 KJV)  The reason they sinned, the reason they failed, the reason for all the murmuring and rebellion, the reason for their refusal to enter into the land of promise was all the same: unbelief.  This agrees completely with the judgment God pronounced when the Israelites balked at Kadesh-Barnea.  (Num 14:11)

One conclusion is hard to miss: Those who refuse to follow the Lord are guilty of unbelief.

In today’s climate where faith is considered to be an entirely private matter subject only to one’s own approval, it’s considered appallingly bad manners to question somebody else’s faith.  And yet that’s exactly the argument here.  To turn from Christ now, he argues, is all the same sin as that committed by the Israelites at Kadesh, and it numbers the turncoats with the unbelievers.  Stark stuff.  It’s not intended to be uncharitable.  It’s just that there’s got to be a line somewhere between who’s in and who’s out.  And once the line is made clear, those standing closest to the line but still on the wrong side are the ones who will feel most offended.
