Something to think about

I asked Jack Brooks over at New Covenant Living why it seems that so much carnality enters Christianity via music and musicians.  Here’s his answer which, he claims, originated from the top of his head.  It must be a good spot.  Here’s what he saith:

Off the top of my head…

1. Music can fake spirituality better than any other art form, because it’s emotional by nature. So it masks deep carnality much better.

2. Charismatics dominate Christian music, and most of them are antinomians.

3. Performers attract more media attention than preachers, and so as a result we hear more about their falls into sin than we do about boring old preachers. So understand what I’m saying here — that there could be far more preachers committing gross sins than performers, just because there are so many more preachers than there are singers. But we don’t actually know stats about preachers, and we don’t hear about anything but the most extreme scandals. So I’m kind of saying that preachers could be sinning up a storm, and we wouldn’t know about it.

4. The performance lifestyle encourages sex sins, because it’s late nights, lots of traveling to places where no one knows you, and you’re far away from the relationships that keep your feet a little more tied to the ground.

To that I would add only one item.  Much modern church music tends to be performance oriented rather than participatory.  Today’s musicians don’t lead us in corporate worship so much as they sing for us in acts of entertainment that exploit worship as a stage.  Entertainment flatters vanity, and people who love flattery tend to be immoral in other areas as well.    Over time, that tends to produce a shift in the kind of people who feel attracted to the music ministry.  And now, here we are, with a series of “Christians” of fame and prominence announcing they’re sodomites and expecting a significant subset of the body of Christ to approve of it… and I should add, expecting those who disapprove to be viewed as unprincipled bigots.  That’s Bro. Steve’s analysis anyhow.

    Well said.
These would have a hard time reconciling their ways with the Word, no matter who else approves or condones.
