Refocus

The news of our republic has been grim of late.  For the first time in a long time, responsible voices are using words like “traitor” to describe leftist leaders.  Fighting words for sure.

I used to remind our congregation that America will eventually fall like every other great civilization, probably not now, but eventually.  Like that dead whale on the beach, America is too big to blow up and takes a while to rot.  This could stink for a long time.  The reality check is that God still rules in the heavens.  A nation cannot slay 1.3 million infants a year and escape his notice.

On the human side, if the Democrats trash the Constitution and try to impose socialism by force, it’s possible that some Americans may attempt to deploy the second amendment.  See: Jefferson, T.  Let’s hope federal courts and state governments will man up and demand the Constitutional requirements for passing a law be observed.  But if not, who knows where this is going?

There’s a great deal of upset on all sides.  The leftists are gloomy, despite the probable victory they have bought with your money, because winning their health care fight will cost many of them their jobs.  Besides, many of them must surely know their party leaders won’t deliver on their bribes.  Like Winston in 1984, they are “doing it for the Party” even though by now many of them must detest the Party.  The rightists are in a smoking fury because they know they are right about the law and the Constitution but don’t have the legislative muscle to make anything stick.  Plus, they’ve been guilty of dirty deeds in the past, too.  So there’s reproach, angst, and malice on every side.  Washington reminds me of a snake that’s hit with birdshot and is biting itself all over.

But a habit of gloom and blame is the Secular Man’s natural state.  He steals his neighbors’ idols and curses when he himself is robbed.  He jackhammers the Constitutional foundation and rages when his house falls in.   He can’t see beyond his headlights, and for all he knows the darkness swarms with gnashing monsters.  So he damns the Creator and yells, “Why hast thou made me thus?”

The Christian does not claim to be aloof from this world’s perils.  If they crater the economy, some of us Christians will lose jobs and homes.   If they start a war, some of us will get shot.  That’s how life is when salt contacts real things.  I don’t like it any more than you do, but even the Son learned obedience by the things he suffered.  Are we above our Master?

And yet, and yet:  There is no God like our Redeemer.  When Egypt was dark, there was light in the houses of the Israelites.  They got water from a rock, bread from the sky, hornets to chase their enemies, smoke to lead them in the day and fire by night.  When the sea closed them in, God made a way through it, then poured out streams in the desert.  When Master broke for lunch, nobody left hungry, and when that was done, he gave his own flesh as bread for the life of the world.  There is none beside him, and God of Jacob is with us.  So let the heathen rage and imagine a vain thing.  Let them do their troubled-sea thing, casting up mire and dirt.  We are not afraid of what flesh can do.

Although the fig tree shall not blossom and no fruit be in the vines; though the olive fail, and the fields yield no food; though the flock is shut out of the fold and there are no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will joy in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk on high places. (Hab 3:17-19)

  2. I’ve shed my tears over it… and you’re right that God is always our refuge and strength. I’m thinking all will be well.

Because think of this, for the first time in my 3 decades, I was fully engaged in my rights as a US citizen, voicing my opinion to representatives, making phone calls for hours, writing letters and emails… more importantly, praying over our Congressional leaders…this outrageous bill created a fervor in me that was a catalyst to doing my part. And I’m just one little peon in this country… I have to think I’m not the only one.

Perhaps this chaos will separate the wheat from the chaff, not just in congressional leaders, but ordinary citizens as well. I’ve completely lost faith in the GOP, but have not given up hope that there are millions across this land who would do whatever it takes to uphold the Constitution and preserve the integrity of this republic.
