America’s Big Question for 2010

It’s a busy year shaping up.  Al Queda and the Taliban are refusing to play dead.  The banking crisis is in a temporary quiescent phase, but all those trillions of phony dollars they printed last year are working like termites on our national weal.  The Marxist take-over of health care will enter the period of deadly earnest when the House and Senate confer on the two bills and the real vote pimping begins.  The global warming scam, utterly discredited in 2009, will trundle along through the halls of power because so many rich and powerful people stand to get even richer from history’s biggest fraud.  Abortion continues its cloistered slaughter of the unborn while America replaces its dead with great hordes of illegal immigrants.  And there will be crises erupting on the scene which nobody could predict.

But the Big Story of 2010 will not be any of these.  The one question which matters above all is this: Who is God?

Our pluralistic society has committed itself in all its decisions, public and private, that this is the one question which must not be reckoned upon.  This philosophical commitment is based on the largest possible falsehood, namely, that religion is a private matter of the heart, and that we’re all better off if things are left that way.

But think about it.  The existence of God is the most important “fact” there is, more important than the rest of the universe put together.  To administrate government as if there is no God is to base all your decisions on the biggest possible falsehood.  Talk about misinformed!  The truth is that any piece of knowledge which is understood apart from God is misunderstood.  No, that does not mean that your arithmetic sums change when you become a Christian.  It just means the Christian mathematician knows where it all comes from, has a reason for the orderliness of his science, and knows that there is intelligent and moral purpose underlying it.  How much more the fields of knowledge peculiar to the mother or father, the lawyer, politician, or doctor?

It’s crucial in the days ahead that Christians conduct their affairs openly in the light of God’s glory.  A theocracy is not our goal, and no true theocracy will be possible until Christ himself establishes one at his appearing and his kingdom.  But we’ve consented to the legal fiction of atheism long enough.  May the Lord grant us a republic whose leaders know their Maker and who understand that the power they wield is borrowed from the Almighty for his purposes.
