Putting diesel in your gas-burner

A friend of mine told me about seeing a gasoline-powered Mercedes get accidentally filled with diesel.  The owner had to spray ether into it to get it started, dribble in some gasoline, coax and prod, use jumper cables on the suffering battery, and after much cussing got the car to burn the diesel.  But it was bad sick — choking, smoking and car barfing.  Not even the best car runs well on diesel if it’s built for gasoline.

All of which is an allegory for how America was built and how it’s being altered.  Our country had certain founding principles.  Our whole system of law, government, economics, social and religious organization, even our personal manners toward families and neighbors are structured around that set of principles.  Nothing can work right if we put diesel where gas ought to be.

The founding principles of America include a Christian notion of fixed law based on divinely revealed precepts.  They include stable (and straight) family relationships.  They include economic self-reliance and the responsibility of each man to produce enough to feed himself and his family.  They include a sacred respect for the lives, property and liberties of others.  They include the free Christian church in the role as national Prophet calling the nation to be worthy of its blessings.

This does not mean each individual has to be a Christian or even that each man believes in Christianity at all.  But on July 4, 1776, America’s leading citizens and her whole population thought the Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount were the noblest expressions of human moral duty, that government and governed were equally God’s creatures, each with its own set of duties and inviolable limitations.  And they brought forth a republic structured around the conviction that this is true.

People tend to act upon what they truly believe, so a morally self-disciplined civilization is the natural outgrowth of a populace whose ideals are rooted in Christian soil.  Only a population habituated to this kind of living can, despite its inevitable sins and failings, keep itself orderly enough to maintain its liberties.

A population lacking these ideals is destined for tyranny by a straightforward process.  Secularism rejects God, which is the first domino to fall.  Without God, there is no such thing as “above” man.  With man at the summit and no other gods beside him, morality reduces to consensus.  Consensus, cut loose from the leash of a divinely taught conscience, becomes the whim of a selfish majority.  When majority whim is the sole basis of law, law reduces at once to mere force.  Government, which is the custodian of law, finds that force is the only law its now-uncivilized people respect.  A government which knows no principle but force will stop at nothing to guard its power, and there you’ve arrived: Tyranny ruling by naked force on no principle higher than its own sake.

It’s no mere slogan that men must choose between the rule of God and the dominion of tyrants.  It’s the physics of how civilization works.  Any civilization, good or bad, is the aggregate human expression of some kind of organizing principle.  Without the living God as that organizing principle, who’s left?  Chairman Mao was succinct in stating the facts of life in a godless state: Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun.

American liberals, who are probably a slight majority of the total population, are determined to pour into America’s Christian gas tank a load of secular diesel fuel.  A wide ranging program of dystopian edicts includes an enduring principle of plunder by taxation, trillions for Wall-Street, a threatened law to buy government healthcare or go to prison, gigantic bribes for senate votes, an impenetrable phalanx of environmental laws preventing Americans from being self sufficient with their own resources, wholesale slaughter of the unborn eventually to be followed — if government medicine becomes law — with wholesale slaughter-by-neglect of the old, and after that the crippled, retarded, and so forth.

American liberals are the only ones mystified about why the republic isn’t running so well.  The country’s economic tumble now seems poised for a second, deeper fall and an eventual period of hyperinflation as leftists print oceans of phony money to finance their schemes.  They are trying to hammer a formerly Christian, Constitutional republic into something fiercely secular and vaguely Marxist.  It won’t work because it can’t.  What no mortal can predict is where the breakpoint is, and if it’s passed, how steep will be the glide path down, or what the final state of affairs may look like.
