History’s largest mass suicide

Anthony Watts has posted an article by guest writer David Deming about the mass suicide of Africa’s Xhosa people brought about by a false religious prophecy.  Nearly 80,000 people deliberately and systematically destroyed every possible means of feeding themselves — and then starved to death.  Read the article here.

Watts and Deming are particularly interested in applying this to carbon dioxide and the West’s ongoing wave of global warming hysteria.  As a Christian, I’m also interested in how people can do phenomenally ruinous things as a result of religious deception.  Global warming hysteria, of course is just that, a case of religious deception in which people who possess only a secular faith live in constant, white-knuckled fear that the fragile earth has no one to safeguard its survival.  And the ecology is so complex… just swatting a fly in the White House could trigger a series of events leading to the ultimate cataclysm.  Environmental worshippers refer to this as the butterfly effect in which the vortex of air swirling around a butterfly’s wing touches off a sequence of increasingly violent atmospheric disturbances leading to a killer hurricane a half a world away.

Man usually reacts to the threat of doom by offering some kind of sacrifice.  In ancient times, people sacrificed animals or perhaps their children.  The Xhosa purposely immolated all the resources they used to make their livings.  Keeping anything in reserve was despised as a half measure, proof of an inadequate faith which spoiled the effect of others’ sacrifices.  So everything had to go.  Everything.  And with each new failure of the Xhosa’s suicidal religion, blame was heaped upon the dwindling cadre of infidels still blasphemously feeding themselves.  We are led to wonder what similar follies await the Secular Man who has rejected God’s one, eternal sacrifice in favor of something else, something less.
