Farewell to a good friend

My dentist once asked me if he was hurting me.  I told him no.  “Good,” he said. “You never have so many friends you can afford to lose one.”

I lost a good friend this week, Mr. William Elgin Brown.  Elgin was a veteran of World War Two, south Asian theater, and a well driller by occupation although he did other things as well.  He was an American in the olden sense: self reliant, plain spoken, self employed, and Christian without apology.  Elgin never took any welfare, and without an excess of boasting about it, he worked hard and saved his money.

Over and above being an American, Elgin was a Christian.  He was unquestionably the most avid student of the Old Testament prophets I have ever met, entirely self-educated in that field.  Like many small town savants, Elgin was not aware of the phenomenal gift of memory he possessed, having memorized Lord-only-knows how much Old Testament as an unintended by-product of study and analysis.  This is all the more remarkable since Elgin became a Christian late in life, around the age of 50.

Elgin used to phone me up every week or two just to chat about prophecy or comment on his latest analysis concerning Israel, the middle east, and “the Assyrian,” which is one of the Old Testament names for the end-time beast.  He was seriously pro-life, and based on his reading of the Old Testament, came to believe that God will not long spare America because of its sins against the unborn.  An aggressive Christian witness, Elgin epitomized the prophetic sort of spirit that the church seems to have lost in these times.  He was convinced of the truth of his message, and he mostly got his message across.

If a man may be judged by the quality of his son, Elgin was one of the best.  Farewell, my brother and my friend, Elgin Brown.  We shall meet again when the trumpet sounds, and we’ll see it when our Redeemer slays the Assyrian with the sword of the Spirit.

  1. I am sorry to learn that you’ve lost a good friend. What a loving tribute to a man who obviously had a significant impact on your life.

    May his memory be eternal.
