How to find the will of God

1 Thessalonians 4:3a;  Matt 6:33

This subject is actually a lot simpler than we make it.  The reason it seems difficult is that we expect God’s will to speak directly on subjects that interest us but which interest him far less.  The sovereignty of God means there is no subject that is outside his will and control.  However, the holiness of God means some subjects are much more important than others.

And he is God, so he gets to decide what really is important.

We generally pay attention to the will of God when there’s a decision to make concerning a job, a spouse, a place to live, or a major purchase.

God would have us pay attention to his will concerning moral and spiritual issues.  He promises that if we will put him and his kingdom first, he will see to it that these other matters get cared for properly.

The way this is supposed to work is quite simple.  God would have us constantly focused on having no other gods before him, keeping his name holy, telling the truth, rightfully earning what you get, being thankful to him, and so on.  If you think these are easy, you’re making the same foolishly proud mistake as the rich young ruler, “All these things have I kept from my youth up!”  Truth is, striving to do these things well would keep you obsessively busy for eternity.  But remember God’s promise.  If you commit yourself to striving after these, he has pledged to compensate for any resulting neglect of lesser things.

Here’s the key: If you want to know God’s will on some earthly matter such as which house to buy, then make sure your priorities are his priorities.  If you’re careless about moral issues while agonizing before him about a house purchase, well… what do you expect?  His Word is already saying, in effect, Get your priorities straight and we’ll talk about this other thing later.

God is a father, a fact we must not forget.  He loves his children, provides for them, and desires to do them good. (Jer 29:11 NKJV)  He knows what is best for his people and has revealed it to them.  He says to put the interests of his kingdom first.  He is God, after all, so he’s entitled to be served and worshiped and for competing human interests to be subordinated to his.  Recognizing this will clear the decks of almost all the life-clutter obscuring our vision of his will.  And then in faith we trust him to clarify those other matters which are, though less important, still necessary for living.  He knows what you need.  Trust what he’s already said about which things come first.  He’ll take care of the rest.
