A parable of mercy

King David’s son, Absalom, tried to overthrow David’s government in a coup.  During the conflict, David was forced to flee from Jerusalem to get some maneuvering room and to protect his own people.  Along the way, a man named Barzillai came to meet him with supplies.

[They] brought beds, and basons, and earthen vessels, and wheat, and barley, and flour, and parched corn, and beans, and lentiles, and parched pulse, and honey, and butter, and sheep, and cheese of kine, for David, and for the people that were with him, to eat: for they said, The people is hungry, and weary, and thirsty, in the wilderness.  s Sam 17:28-29

Eventually David won the battle, his enemies were slain, his kingdom was confirmed, and the nation was spared a great civil war.  He reigned until the end of his days, but he never forgot the kindness of loyal friends in the wilderness who risked their lives for the true king.  When David was on his deathbed giving final instructions to Solomon, he said:

Shew kindness unto the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those that eat at thy table: for so they came to me when I fled because of Absalom thy brother. 1 Kings 2:7

The reward for helping the king in the wilderness was to be a guest at the king’s table forever.  The Bible says God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, which you have shown toward his name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister. (Heb 6:10)  As you’re going about the business of living, look for the king and his friends.  You may find them hungry or thirsty, sick or in prison, naked, or a stranger alone and friendless.  Take the risk to do them good.  There’s an everlasting blessing in it.
