Freedom, abused, is lost

The mainstream media spend a good deal of time these days lamenting the demise of newspapers.  Lots of papers are going bust, and for good reason.  For the past forty or fifty years, they’ve made leftwing activism the core business of “respectable” newspapering.

Sure, it was their right.  But it was an abuse of their right, so now newspapers are dying.  Duh.

Case in point.  NPR published a radio spot last week on the Seattle Post-Intelligencer going out of business — mostly, anyway.  They’re laying off most of their staff and going on-line only.  The NPR spot featured an interview with one Joel Connelly who described one of his first big victories.  He got a tip about a land swap, he said, in which some government park land would be traded out so logging companies could get the timber.  “We were able to stop that sale,” Connelly said.

Have you got the liberal script down?  Government should possess land, not people, for they would exploit its resources.  Environmental extremism, evil logging companies whacking down our sacred forest.  The job of the newspaper is to stop any business deal that displeases leftists.

So whose sale is getting stopped now?  Leftwing pushiness posing as a newspaper has been systematically ticking off for-profit enterprises throughout the whole danged country until there are not enough unoffended advertisers to keep newspapers financially afloat.

I cannot remember a time when Fourth Estate considered its business reporting news rather than using its voice to drive leftist outcomes.  To be clear about it, newspapers do have the right under the Constitution to behave this way.  By the same token, businesses who have been harmed by their actions have a right to send advertising revenues elsewhere.  Which is what they’re doing in numbers big enough to put newspapers and TeeVee networks in the red.

And by the way, thanks for the internet, Al!
