Mixing church with the guns of Navarone

The Democrats’ spendileptic convulsion is now law.  It’s worth a few words to think through the professed motives for it.  Most of it boils down to helping a neighbor.  The idea is that my neighbor is in a heap ‘o trouble because a predatory lender duped him, or he got a pink slip at work, or he got sick and couldn’t keep up with his bills.

Okay: I am very sorry for those duped by lenders, or who’ve gotten laid off (been there, done that), sick, and so on.  Compassion for the down and out is good.  For you Democrats out there doing a feelings exam on me, my feelings are one hundred percent fully DNC approved on these issues.

With that settled, let’s talk principles, here.  The idea that each man has a moral obligation to help his neighbor is found in most religions.  Heck, even the atheists will sign up for that.  The next question is what method will be used to get our neighbors this aid.  On that, I see three options.  1)  Shirk it.  2)  Volunteer.  3)  Use force to compel some other neighbor to give aid  in your place.  America’s two major political parties divide pretty neatly between 2) and 3).

Option 1 is morally wrong, and I’ll deal with that some other time.  Option 2 is called “freedom,” and it’s one of America’s founding principles.  I personally favor this one.  Option 3 takes the religious principle of duty to neighbor and imposes it at government gunpoint on your neighbor.  The problem here — follow this closely…  and watch my eyes — is that it relieves the discomfort of one neighbor by afflicting a different neighbor under the overt threat of being killed if he pushes back.

Democrat method for encouraging you to help your neighbor

Killed?  Well, yeah, everything the government does, it does under threat of force.  The government puts up a traffic light and tells you to stop when it’s red.  So you run the red light, and then a guy with blue lights will come.  If you don’t pull over, a whole lot more guys with blue lights will come to his aid and insist that you stop.  If you keep on resisting after that, they’ll eventually start shooting.  The nation is so accustomed to over-policing that it’s hard to convince people of the fact that every act of government is done just this way, that is, under the overt threat of deadly force.  This reality pervades every particle of American society, and yet people have trouble taking it in.

So here’s the mighty denouement: Taxation for the purpose of relieving the unfortunate or merely shiftless works the same way.  Government says they’re going to help, but you are going to pay for it… or else.

I say this is mixing religious belief with government power in a particularly ugly way.  And it’s not those VRWC fundies doing it, either.
