Lotta water

Peter prophesied that a hallmark of the end time would be wilful denial of the flood. (2 Pe 3:5)  No surprise, we’re there.  Secular people devoutly resist the idea of a God who would judge with force.

The game must surely be daunting for them.  Earth is covered with liquid water, a feature you don’t find anywhere else.  What to do about such a unique feature?  Well, prove it isn’t unique!  Send a probe somewhere, Mars maybe, and do some space dowsing.  That fad has died down for now, but a couple of years ago we were treated to daily speculations about the Martian floods with pictures like this one offered as evidence that water used to be there.  Note to reader: You have to squint your eyes a bit to see the proof that water arranged these rocks and dust like this.

So, playing a game of whose daddy can beat your daddy, they bring out the big science cudgel and beat up the biblical account with it.  They even have help from certain Christians who claim the flood was local.  But this is, to be as polite as possible, not based on the best exegesis of the relevant texts.  Genesis 7 and 8 plainly intend the reader to understand that the water covered the planet.

Two questions for brief comment: 1) Where did the water come from, and 2) Where did the water go?

The second question is easier to answer: The oceans are full of the flood waters.  The water did not dry up, nor could it have.  There was too much of it.

The first question is more difficult, but clues pop up here and there.  The Bible names three sources of water, rain, the “windows of heaven,” and the “fountains of the great deep.”  We understand rain, so that should go without a lot of comment.  The “windows of heaven” may just be a synonym for an enormous amount of rain, or it may be referring to water from an extraterrestrial source.  There are, for example, water meteors entering the earth’s atmosphere even now, and people have published pictures of these things entering the atmosphere and flashing to vapor.  The linked article suggests that up to “30,000 house-sized snowballs” enter the atmosphere each day.  Well, not that God is constrained on His miracles, but let’s just add a few zeroes to that 30,000 and hypothesize that that was the windows of heaven.

Engineers and physicists will no doubt assail this suggestion on the grounds that the energy levels would be too great for the water to remain in liquid state.  Granted, but we are speaking of a miracle of divine judgment, and I’m merely suggesting a natural source for the water which was termed “windows of heaven.”

The fountains of the great deep receive interesting testimony from the oil industry.  While searching for oil in Libya, the world’s largest (known) deposit of fossil water was discovered, the Nubian Sandstone Aquifier.  This underground body of water is estimated to contain 150,000 cubic kilometers of water, or just under 36,000 cubic miles of water.  For comparison, this is almost seven times the combined volume of all five of America’s Great Lakes.

There are other indications of vast volumes of water even deeper down.  Livescience.com reported on a finding based on seismographs that a volume of water the size of the Arctic Ocean lies deep in the earth’s interior beneath Asia.  One can imagine the result if a seismic event fractured the crust and rapidly liberated such a giant volume of water.  So, even after the flood, the remaining volumes of subterranean water indicate that the fountains of the great deep may have constituted a gigantic source, a source as almost as big as the present-day oceans.

Genesis chapter 1 reports that the earth’s original construction featured a curious arrangement of water and land.  In light of what remains of fossil water and oceans of highly compressed water beneath the crust, we may imagine the initial flood event as a rupture in the crust that liberated these stores of subterranean water.  As portions of the crust subsided beneath the rushing waters, the flood came upon the earth.  The crust which subsided the most became the oceanic abyss.  We live where it didn’t sink so much.

The moral lesson is intended to be a blunt force wake-up for the mind.  He is a very big God.  If He can break up the earth in judgment, then nothing else is a stretch for Him.  So we remember the words of the angel in Revelation 14:7, “Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.”
