Know when to fold ’em

Unable to accept how his fame vanished, Dan Rather keeps trying to give life to a mannequin by inflating it with hot air.  National Public Radio aired a report today in which Mr. Rather defends the documents supposedly showing that George Bush was absent from his post during his military service and that political pressure had been applied to make his superiors praise Bush anyway.  You may recall the bitter 2004 presidential campaign in which the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth found many military men who had served in Vietnam with John Effin’ Kerry and were highly uncomplimentary about the quality of Kerry’s service and the truthfulness of Kerry’s statements about it.

CBS, in a move which would have helped Kerry enormously had its charges stuck, produced the famous MS-Word document from the early 1960s.  The document purported to show that George Bush had been absent without leave while serving in the Alabama National Guard.  Within hours of its publication by CBS, the document was convincingly shown to be a forgery, and CBS was obliged to begin the most ignominious climbdown in network history.  After the election, Rather was removed as CBS news anchor, covered with an elvish invisibility cloak, and thereafter left CBS entirely.

Refusing to let it go, Rather now insists, “Nobody has ever proven the documents to be anything but what they purported to be…  What the documents stated has never been denied — by the president or anyone around him.”

Those who have seen the 2004  screen shots of the document made famous by the blog Little Green Footballs can only regard Rather’s protests as somewhere between ludicrous and pathetic.

To be fair to Mr. Rather, who among us has not done reckless deed, gotten embarrassed, and then had to eat crow, feathers and all? Real humans everywhere feel sorry for Rather, even the ones who don’t like him.  He is quite old, and it’s too late to repair a ruined reputation.  He’s like a boxer who wins 14 rounds on points but loses the fight by disqualification for a low blow in the 15th round.  It was so unnecessary.

Certain things intensify our pity.  First, the mistake was made when offended conservatives had complained for years about media smears which, because of institutional leftist bias, went permanently unanswered.  Oh, what a difference the internet made (thanks, Al!) when the pajamaheddin could fight back and win.  So there was a heapin’ helpin’ of I-told-you-so in the affair mixed with primal screams of conservative triumph.  The media had always loved to score a take-down against conservatives, and now it was the conservatives’ turn.  Rather became Adoni-Bezek (Judges 1:7), minus his thumbs, as decades of pent-up conservative indignation were excreted upon him.

Second, Mr. Rather’s error took place quite literally in front of the whole wide world.  True, there might have been some children of nekkid tribesmen in the Amazon who didn’t hear about it, but they’d be the only ones.  Pretty much everyone else on the planet saw it happen and sniggered about it.

But the third and key difference is in what happened afterward.  The right course of action was to openly acknowledge the sin, own it, spit on it, and walk away from it.  Repentance was the right course, and Mr. Rather received very foolish counsel to deal with the matter any other way.  The result is now that he has morphed into an obsessed individual who seems convinced that the only way to clear his own name is by trashing George Bush’s.  This doesn’t look like it will end well.
